The Subtle Anatomy of Kundalini

The Kundalini Shakti appears differently depending on the vehicle in which it is operating. Many artists' depictions portray the Kundalini Shakti in its form in the Subconscious mind. Here the kundalini rises through a central channel (sushumna) through lotus-like chakras.

There is a helix passing through these chakras. The channel beginning at the base of the spinal tube on the left-hand side is the ida; the one on the right side is the pingala.

This lovely art comes from http://occultopedia.com/c/chakra.htm.

You can see the helices even clearer in this image drawn

Another thing I like about this image is that the artist graphically captures presence of the attentional principle between the two eyes (the black form inside the circle between the meditator's eyebrows). We call this the pituitary center—it is actually slightly above and behind the two petals of the Ajna chakra.

He also shows the spirit (the little man sitting below the top of the head.) We call this the pineal center, the seat of the spirit—this is slightly above and behind the pituitary center.

The kundalini appears as the etheric form in the Metaconscious mind. It looks more like the depiction shown in this image drawn from

Other artists attempt to depict the colored, whirling disks seen when the kundalini rises into the vehicle of the Psychic Realm.

Here's an artist's version of these colored disks that appears on

Most people utilize their understanding of their chakras as templates of meaning, yielding a wide range of correspondences to personal and transpersonal experiences. The descriptions of what the chakras do and what they mean varies with each source you consult.

For our own interpretation of what the chakras of the Subconscious mind portend, see our article about the Chakras of the Subconscious mind.

In keeping with this interpretation of the chakras from varying contexts, here's another artist's rendition of what the chakras—and mirrored in them, the world—may look like from the vantage point of the First Planetary Initiation.

Not quite so airy-fairy as their New Age and religious brethren, there is also a group of more scientifically-minded individuals who attempt to correlate each chakra to known anatomical structures, such an endocrine gland or a nerve plexus. This artist portrays this more pragmatic bent.

As the kundalini awakens in you, you will begin to visualize the subtle anatomy of each of your vehicles. You will recognize these different portrayals, and the many other presentations of the chakras in the many forms within you.
