When Sleep Is Interrupted by the Songs of Birds

By George A. Boyd © 1992

Excerpted from Destiny Unfolds

I am told your night's repose is interrupted

By the songs of birds, your dreams interspersed

With the night calls of orioles and robins,

Juxtaposed against the drone of crickets in the bush.

This communion with Nature's choirs

Has left you limp and exhausted,

Fully expecting at any moment

To be pulled into slumber by the languorous arms of sleep.

Your avian alarm clock is to be much preferred

To the sounds of ambulances shrieking in the night

The violation of gunfire, or the screams of those

Molested by violence, assault or crime.

Perhaps if our criminals and rapists would listen instead

To the peaceful melody of the songs of birds

Instead of attending to mental voices of compulsion and anger

Leading them to acts of violence, lust or theft–this world would be a better place to live.

Therefore I wish your enjoyment of the symphony of the birds

The soothing embrace of their lullabies

To transport you into the rapturous rhythms of the night

Blend you into the Perfect Harmony of Nature's Song, content you in your nights and days.
