Articles on Recovery from Addiction

George A. Boyd was raised in a family where his mother, grandmother, and cousin died from untreated alcoholism. Growing up in this highly dysfunctional family, he had many issues common to adult children of alcholics.

To understand more about this troubling disease that ravaged his family and severly impacted his own life, George completed the certificate program of Alchol Drug Counseling and Alchohol Drug Studies at UCLA Extension in 1987. During this period he also attended a series of educational groups with David Killian, LCSW on co-dependency, recovery from addiction and several other related topics.

To apply his new knowledge, George led recovery groups for adult children of dysfunctional families for one and one half years. He also worked with heroin addicts in a methadone clinic for two and one half years, and gathered data in a year-long research project that studied a new experimental drug for heroin addiction.

During this period when he was employed as a drug counselor, George wrote two manuscripts, Methadone: A Drug Counselor's Guide and Meditation for Recovery. He also gave a lecture and workshop at the Whole Life Expo on this same theme, "Meditation for Recovery."

In 1994, he had his first book published on this topic by the Rosen Publishing Group in New York, Drugs and Sex. This book is now out of print. This popular treatment was written for teenagers and low reading adults. He continued to write on the topic of recovery during the 1990s in a manuscript entitled, Tools for Recovery.

He has also continued his ongoing study in this field. In graduate school, his traineeship specialized in working with a dual diagnosis population. [Dual diagnosis patients have a a psychotic mental illness and a substance abuse problem at the same time.]

We offer a selection of George's articles on this topic. Click on the links to your left to read them.

We have now published a book with the best of George's articles on recovery from addictions, Meditation for Recovery: Key Techniques for Maintaining Sobriety, Sanity and Serenity
