On Bija (Transformative) Mantra

Excerpted from The Yoga of the Seven Mudras: An Introduction to the Mudrashram® System of Integral Meditation

"There are several categories of transformative or bija mantra, which are described below."

Vehicular bija mantra "This awakens individual vehicles, out of attunement with the Soul. This is usually done with an aim to gain spiritual powers (siddhis). This creates moderate to severe imbalances in the psyche with acute localized physical and psychological symptoms. This can be extremely disruptive to personality functioning, ranging from inability to concentrate and perform skilled, coordinated work tasks to complete psychotic disintegration. Improper use of breathing techniques or Kriya Yoga may have similar impact on certain vehicles."

Planetary Divine Name "This awakens the Soul Spark, the Soul and the Monad, and their corresponding vehicles. Use of this bija mantra may break off the Soul's attunement with its higher octaves of Being in the Cosmic, Supracosmic and Transcendental levels, but does not create imbalances in the vehicles in the Planetary Realms and does not negatively impact personality functioning."

Cosmic Divine Name "This awakens the Astral Soul, the God Self, the vehicles of the God Self, and the Moon Soul. Use of this bija mantra creates a split or dichotomy between the activated centers and the actual development at the Planetary levels, but usually does not disrupt personality functioning or the operation of the vehicles in the Planetary Realms."

"Use of this mantra has the effect of intensifying visionary experiences in meditation, but reality testing mechanisms typically remain intact and the meditator recognizes this material arises on the inner planes. There may be some difficulty in returning to normal waking awareness becoming grounded with this mantra."

Supracosmic Divine Name "Also called Guru Mantra, this bija mantra awakens a seed atom corresponding to one of the 73 paths of the Supracosmic Realm. These seed atoms ultimately reunite with the Supracosmic Soul [and lead upward to the source of the mantra]. When used inappropriately, they can create moderate to severe imbalances."

"While giving great bliss and visionary experiences to the meditator, these seed atoms exert a powerful magnetic pull on the attention and may make it difficult for the meditator to return to waking awareness and remain grounded. Further, they create the sense of the illusory nature of the personality and body, and this may lead to frightening dissociative and depersonalization experiences."

"In some cases, use of these mantramic seeds may also activate the Kundalini Shakti, leading to the energization of these higher vehicles of the Cosmic and Supracosmic Realms, with concomitant shutting down of the Conscious mind. This produces the state of samadhic trance that does not allow an individual to move the body and perform normal activities for long periods of time."

"The powerful detachment produced by sustained use of these mantras may also lower motivation for achievement and suspend the desire to set goals for personal development. The individual may come to repose in an inner state of contentment, while disengaging from pursuits that develop personality such as education, developing social and romantic relationships, and career development."

"It may also become increasingly difficult for some individuals, who use these mantras over long periods of time, to make their own personal decisions. This may lead individuals to become dependent on the guidance and advice of those they perceive as more advanced on their chosen spiritual path. Some of these individuals may ultimately re-identify with this higher nucleus, and may lead their lives as if they had no human self and they were simply carriers of a spiritual teaching, and to carry out service to their teacher and the Divine as they understand It."

Transcendental Divine Name "This awakens vehicles on Transcendental paths exclusively. These are encountered on the First through Fifth Transcendental Paths, though they are more routinely used on the Fifth Transcendental Path than the other Paths. This leads to similar imbalances between the personality and the nucleus of spiritual development as is seen with the Guru Mantra. But there is typically less disruption of the ability to perform action, as spiritual work at these levels normally does not activate the Kundalini Shakti (thereby suspending the activity of the Conscious mind)."

Alayic Divine Name "This is the original mantra that is in attunement with the actual state of spiritual development. This operates at the cutting edge of spiritual growth and correctly unfolds all of the vehicles in the Transcendental, Supracosmic, Cosmic, Planetary, and Subtle Realms, and within the personality, without creating the imbalances caused by activating inappropriate octaves of spiritual development. This is the mantra that is given in the Mudrashram® Master Course in Meditation."

[There is also another mantra, which is very important to know. While it does not transform the potentials of the ensouling entities and their vehicles like the other categories of transformative mantra detailed above, it is essential to ultimately identify this mantra. It is your key to Liberation and Eternal Life.]

Ineffable Name "This is the primal state of existence, consciousness and bliss called Satchitananda. This name cannot be spoken, but only indicated. At the time of liberation, when the Soul atom is merged into its origin, the ray of Alaya returns momentarily to this state. Focusing the attention on this name brings highest enlightenment."
